The best power stations for home backup

For outages, capacity and output matter most. A full-size fridge alone uses 1 to 1.5 kWh a day and needs up to 1,200 W to start its compressor; add a router, lights and phones and you're near 2 kWh a day.

We rank stations of 1,000 Wh or more on capacity, output, battery longevity and value, with a bonus for instant UPS switchover. Plug your own appliances into the runtime calculator to see how long each one lasts.

How to choose

Budget by the day

Estimate your daily watt-hours, then multiply by the days you want to cover without recharging.

Check startup surge

Fridges, freezers, sump and well pumps need a brief surge well above their running watts. Surge ratings of 3,000 W or more handle most homes.

UPS mode

A 10–20 ms switchover keeps a router, PC or CPAP running when the grid drops, without you touching anything.

Expansion and solar

Expandable models and 500 W+ solar input let you ride out multi-day outages.

Frequently asked questions

How long will a 2,000 Wh power station run a fridge?

About 30–40 hours for a typical full-size fridge using 1.2 kWh a day, after inverter losses. Newer, smaller fridges last longer.

Can a power station power my whole house?

Not a whole house at once. Large units (3,600 W) paired with a transfer switch can run selected circuits like the fridge, furnace blower, lights and a well pump.

Should I keep it plugged in all the time?

Yes, most can sit on the charger in UPS mode. Some models draw 15–35 W at idle with the inverter on, so switch AC off when you don't need it during an outage.
